Tucked between sand dunes and pine plantations, thatched eel huts crouch, they all have their own name and history: Smugglers Hut, Jeppas Hut, Customs Hut.
Outside the shacks traditional fishing-tackle hangs on drying frames. It is only as darkness falls in late summer that the eel traps are laid, an indication of the approaching annual eel festival. It is now that the eel dishes are prepared in restaurants and eel sheds salted, smoked, poached, fried and soup.
The eel has a short season but the beaches are always there to be enjoyed walks, outings, culture and nature.
